Aloha,
Thanksgiving greetings from Barbara Helynn Heard. The Seattle rain falling softly outside my window makes beautiful music. Water! I love it! I'm also aware of the damage caused by water via Hurricane Sandy. I embrace the paradox.
I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE LANDS OF MY ANCESTORS AND RELATIVES. My mother's family has lived for 7 generations in Greenfield, NH ~ my east coast home base. Driving to Greenfield from the airport my whole body responds. My bones relax, my breath becomes full. I still feel New Hampshire in my bones!
PRAYER OF LINEAGE
In my teaching travels to the east coast I bring with me mana - spiritual energy - of various Hawaiian teachers. While Mana Lomi® founder Maka'ala Yates is my primary lomilomi teacher and mentor, I also soak up teachings from other lomilomi teachers. I learned this joyful prayer from Kumu Lomi Harry Uhane Jim. Harry shares this prayer with a big smile on his face, laughter and passion in his voice, and he uses expressive hand motions for emphasis. (The specific wording here is mine, based on my memory of Harry's words.)
To all of the fathers, brothers, uncles and sons in my lineage from today back to the beginning of creation, I love you!
To all of the mothers, sisters, aunties and daughters in my lineage from today back to the beginning of creation, I love you!
As I stand at the intersection of these lineages, my life is the sum total of all of you. I am present to this experience.
To all the male descendants who come through me, directly or indirectly, I love you!
To all the female descendants who come through me, directly or indirectly, I love you!
While speaking this prayer, I have intent to maintain compassion for my relatives and ancestors, perhaps especially those who did things I'm disturbed by. It helps to remind myself that if these people had the information and/or experiences that I have now, they would have made different choices.

I love teaching Mana Lomi®. In my teaching I emphasize body awareness, use of one's weight, development of keen palpation skills and the use of the creative power of the words. My intent as a teacher is to see the Light in each person and to help each student to be and to do their very best.
Lomilomi has been a primary focus of my life since 1996 when I graduated from Brian Utting School of Massage and established my active private practice in Seattle, WA. I've taught lomilomi since 2006.
ABOUT MANA LOMI®
Mana Lomi® is a style of lomilomi developed by Native Hawaiian Maka'ala Yates, D.C.- pictured here - drawing on his 16 year apprenticeship with beloved and well known teacher Aunty Margaret Machado, and his other teachers. This Big Island Style Lomi lineage is very therapeutic, specific work which addresses and helps resolve injury.
